Mar. 4 - 1903
Hon. Victor Murdock,
Washington, D.C.

Dear Sir:-
I am writing you in regard to my mother's pension. We have been trying
for about thirteen years to get this pension, but do not seem to be able to
do so. As the case is complicated somewhat, I thought, I would write you and
see, if you could not do something for us in this matter, as you know our
family quite well. I wish to explain to you, that my father, William Dennis
Aley, Madison Aley and Henry Aley were brothers and all were in the Union
army and all of them, enlisted at the same time and I think in the same
company, at least Dennis and Madison Aley did. My father, Dennis Aley,
enlisted, Aug. 8 1862 in Co. K. 77 -N.Y. Infty. He was wounded at the battle
of Chancellorsville, May 2- 1863 in the foot and was captured the same day
and taken prisoner to Richmond, Va. Now here, Mr. Murdock, comes the trouble
in this case. The records do not show, that father was wounded and taken
prisoner, but he was marked as a deserter. Later on, he was paroled and
still wishing to serve in the Union army and knowing it was death to violate
his parole and be captured a second time under the name of Dennis Aley, he
reenlisted at Memphis, Tenn, under the name of John H. Ford. Now, none of
his relations or friends know in what service he was in, under the name of
John H. Ford. It is presumed, however, that he served in the same capacity,
as he did before he re-enlisted, but the evidence asked for by the pension
bureau cannot be given. It is simply a mistake, somewhere, as there was not
a more faithful soldier, than father. We wish, you would kindly examine, the
papers in this claim and see about the service of Dennis Aley, under the name
of Ford, and it may be possible, you can unravel this case and get mother,
her pension. There is evidence on file by his brother, Madison Aley,
stating, that his brother, Dennis Aley was wounded and captured on May 2
-1863 and paroled. The Government records show service, under the name of
John H. Ford at Memphis, Tenn. After father was paroled, but not the nature
of the service. It seems they have the evidence, but will not use it, to aid
mother in getting her pension. We trust, you will kindly use your efforts in
assisting us in this matter.
Resp. Yours,
C. G. Aley
Claims, No 61344.

When she was born, the attending doctor was impatient (Grandma said Drunk)
and wrote her name on the birth certificate as Mary Elizabeth Bynum. (Her
father was Carnes Benjamin Bynum, She was named by her parents as Laura Faye Bynum. She didn't learn of this fact until she went to get married, the first time. Her brother, Lester, (16 years older) nicknamed her "Cyclone Bill" , because she was a tomboy and would slam the doors going in and out of the house. This name later became shortened to Billee. She was referred to as Billee for many years by family and friends. When she turned 44 or so, she decided that "Billee" was to "young" and undignified and started referring to herself as Mary. She married her first husband, Leo Albert Geasland, twice( divorcing between marriages). She married Patrick Ira Owens, as a widow, in 1961 and divorced a year later. Therefore , she was Mary Elizabeth Laura Faye Bynum Geasland Geasland Owens........Billee for short!
